Summary
If you are of a certain age, you may remember dreading the pickled beetroot making the table at family events, or even putting on a sandwich with cheese, usually white bread. Thankfully, time has moved on, and beetroot now makes the cut of a smoothie, something far more beneficial than a pink bread sandwich. Whilst the taste of beetroot can be quite earthy, when mixed with fruits such as pineapple, apple and berries, it becomes more palatable to those who would otherwise prefer to steer clear.
Beetroot has many qualities, many of which are down to the cardioprotective effects of a little molecule called nitric oxide. Nitric Oxide supports cellular signalling, improves the function of our blood vessels and lowers blood pressure.
Furthermore, the phytochemicals in beetroot, such as betanin, saponins, and polyphenols, reduce the effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and therefore are considered to be a powerful antioxidant.
This beetroot smoothie is simple to make and is packed full of benefits. What’s not to like?
